How to make the healthy choice?

Healthy food can be tasty as! Here are some tips to order the 'right thing' off the menu!

Brunch time health tips to take you anywhere:

1. Milk Coffee- order a skimmed/semi skimmed milk coffee to cut your saturated fat intake and calories by half while still getting high levels of calcium

2. Choose a meal which has the best chance of achieving the plate model rule (1/2 plate vegetables, ¼ plate protein, ¼ carbohydrate)- this is hard to do and something I am always striving to find

3. Don’t bother with the freshly squeezed juices or smoothies despite all the health benefits they might be trying to claim. These supposedly super food smoothies/juice can be a meal on their own!!

4. Brunch literally means breakfast and lunch so make sure you choose a meal likely to keep you full for a long time to avoid the temptation of dunch (between dinner and lunch) before dinner. Order a side of vegetables or an extra poached egg if needed.

5. When choosing eggs and your keen to keep calories low always go for poached- when fried they use butter, when scrambled they use butter and cream!

6. Ask for sauces on the side e.g. Hollandaise is butter and egg yolk only!

7. When there are upsizing options like bacon or haloumi check what other options could be more nutritious e.g. spinach, seasonal vegetables, beans
